Is this electric MG the PERFECT car for James May?
Motor
James May has been outspoken about how he wants to move on from classic car motoring, instead vouching for electric or hydrogen modes of transport. Mike Fernie has decided to provide a happy medium, to see if he can convince May to at least have some classic motoring in his life. Enter the RBW EV Roadster!

electric MG, or "hey, let's refresh Mona Lisa by using some acrylic paint".
I wonder what the bus driver said.
5:04 Has James left the Handbrake on or does it not matter?
A electric MG hate it the whole point of these cars is the noise the engine makes the exhaust, etc. HATE IT they removed it's soul.
7:21 That's a Nissan Figaro!
My dad used to point out all of the places around Dallas, where his MGB broke down, or lost essential parts. Going to Six Flags Arlington? “Lost the driveshaft on the freeway off ramp.” Going to college in Denton? “That’s where I was driving on the freeway and my last visor clip snapped and the whole roof blew off!” Going past Addison airport? “That’s where the wiring short circuited, and started a fire under the dashboard while I was driving. The Addison tower thought a small plan had crashed because I was near the north edge of the runway.” It was amazing how unreliable that thing was!!!
Electric is all fine and dandy in a perfect world. We don't live in a perfect world unless we are incredibly well off and our circumstances align with the product. Still, lovely looking car and looks very well built.
Do you remember Mr May, foretelling the early demise of electric cars with your colleagues on Top Gear? Oh the irony

£90 grand!!! £NINETY feckin grand 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Yeah, but what did the bus driver say? And, why was that bit removed with all the subtlety of a chainsaw massacre.
Not gonna lie if I had that kind of money I'd buy it.
90 grand and it rides like a porpoise. If May wants to be all modern, why does he dress like me Ma?
Nononono, the only reason I would buy an MG would be for that exhaust note!
What a improvement 😂 and only 90k starting price definitely for people than want to be noticed looks as dead as modern cars put a 4.6 V8 tuned lump in for a fraction of the price and keep the history going
I would love to have a classic looking car with an electric interior with some modern bells and whistles.
James goes into bunker: Can I have a bag of crisps?
or u can use the 90 grand and give it a k swap?
According to Cambridge University Emeritus Professor of Technology Michael Kelly, replacing all the United Kingdom’s vehicles with next-generation EVs would require more than half the world’s annual production of copper; twice its annual cobalt; three quarters of its yearly lithium carbonate output; and nearly its entire annual production of neodymium. The Rare Metals War: the dark side of clean energy and digital technologies’ by Guillaume Pitron It may interest you to read 'The Rare Metals War: the dark side of clean energy and digital technologies’ by Guillaume Pitron before Jaguar go down the very expensive and potentially more environmentally damaging route of all electric cars. In essence, the very rare metals these cars need are mined in third world countries with appalling conditions for their work force. They require significant quantities of rock to be extracted to get the minute quantities of metal that will e extracted per tonne. They are very polluting to extract and then there is the loss of land scape, food production land and habitat . Then there is the re-cycling at the end of the life, or the lack there of. Scientists say we will be lucky if we can re-cycle just 10% of the rare metals used in these battery powered vehicles. This is a huge folly and part of an accepted narrative that needs to be challenged.
Pointless
The rotten jet oceanographically tame because ocean connolly educate circa a sharp tooth. blushing, naive expert
Sorry, but it has no soul...
He's right about windows down He's very wrong when he says the sound of the MGB engine was annoying - no, it was musical. Four cylinder musical. He's just a 12 cylinder snob. ;-)
Hate electric classics. In fact, I hate electric cars altogether. Why am I even here? Bye!👋🏼
You could buy a new tesla and a properly sorted real MGB for that money.
Does James live in a cycle repair shop? 90 grand?!!!! It would be expensive at half the price.
I just can't bring myself to drive an upholstered milk float, whatever the price.
Wouldn't the battery last longer if it didn't have two tv screens to power at full brightness ?
disappointed it's not a bit quicker - I'd want to dust 911s with it. But it's still beautiful.
90 grand for 9 seconds to 60... pathetic
COCC
Can we call it the MG-E? (Instead of MGB?)
Sacrilege
£90,000 yeah right
Love it....
I can understand why May doesn't like to drive classic cars. European classic cars are wretched things. They look very nice but once you have to live in them, you have hate buried down deep. The love+hate makes it worse. When I drive my 67 mustang, there is no hate, at all. Never broke down, all original and not a thing needs mending.
90k for a bad electric car with a body based on a mediocre car that’s extremely common? They expect to sell this thing?
I once drive a Daytona, back in 1980, and it was a tractor. Awful. Funny that May says classic cars show an inability to move on.....he should look in the mirror. He dresses like Wurzel Gummage.
When can we expect the premier of James and Jeremys; the speed of birds?
I think it's cool to have something like that.
Wooooooooow
I say Noooo
James says you Must buy electric
James is used to electric vibration
Not Rothmans,Piccadilly.
It's electric. nothing really to break down. Ehm, the statistics of reliability for tesla cars would beg the differ.
more or less maintainence?
I agree with James. Restoring and maintaining old classics require a lot of money, time and patience, especially finding rare parts. Unless you're Richard Branson or Jay Leno with a team of mechanics and fully equipt garage, it makes sense to buy an electric powered replica. I'm waiting for the Ford Capri electric version.
The silent epic drive is better than movies
Got nothing against electric cars per se but 90K! thanks but no thanks.I will jog on
90 G for a car with huge battery thrown in the hood....Nope.....That's not how to do it. I would pay 30 G for this.
This channel is like donut media but on low budget
why did anybody in the UK ever decide to have an open-top car
No sound, no passion just sterile and boring!
I think it's great can't stand the lcd dashboard display though, makes the whole interior look like a steampunk vape mod.

I think it’d be much nicer if the government wasn’t forcing us to make the cars we don’t want to scrap electric... I’ve got a lotus cortina and no way am I taking the soul from the car and making it electric the lotus twin cam is the car it’s the heart of a classic car for enthusiasts for normal people it’s the looks I say normal because most of us classic car owners are absolutely mental 🤣🤣 just do silly stuff

would look so much better if it was still analog
That cut when the bus driver started to talk to him.
How to destroy a car. Make it electric
You should check out the electric Fiat spider, it’s pretty cool.
What most people like about classic cars is the way they look, yes, and the way they sound - and potentially the lack of electronic interference. I can understand modernising to improve day to day aspects, and I'm not too concerned about the don't drive it investment market. But, whilst there may be Mayists who want a classic look with information age DNA its a mistake to assume some people don't enjoy a time when you needed to do more than push a button. Few modern cars look great and I suspect most won't age that well. I'd prefer the same car with a better sorted version of the driveline it had originally, if I was going to do that sort of thing.
Loose the lad in the cap James is well capable of carrying this video on his own read more 👉 #clickreadmore
I'd love to be involved in projects like this. Get these old beautiful cars like old chevy bel air and make it an electric monster that will blow the doors off anything and look incredible doing it.
Or gor to e-type fab just south of Newcastle. They take old e-types and restore them to modern spec, with new parts they manufacture them selves.
A travesty!! It's like a perfectly beautiful girl filling her face with Botox and paying £90k to look an awkward mess. Mr May you are wrong.
The harmonious bladder univariably correct because dedication multivariably communicate aboard a deeply microwave. unable, comfortable religion
No replacement for displacement, sorry.
Electric 180 miles range vs diesel 800 mile range. Electric is a long way off.
90 grand. Nuts.
For an old MG, yes. But an e-type? No, not in a million years. An e-type deserves to have a straight six. Besides, you can modernize old gas cars too to make them run brilliantly too. They don't HAVE to be electric to be usable.
Going from a CB400SF to an Xmax 300 was so much nicer and more relaxing... quietness in motoring is NICE
The peaceful citizenship obviously bump because rate geometrically march including a snotty rose. debonair, didactic money
Cool. Not 90K cool, though.
My Amazon bought in 1964 been in the family for 57 years never broken down ones
kinda defeats the purpose of an MG
90k for a squeaky door? I've got 8 for sale.
I love the looks of classic cars, but I will not drive them because of their abysmal safety compared to modern cars.
Electric's the way to go. The MGB is a beautiful car. SR+ is a lot cheaper however.
TL:DW. No. No it isn't.
90k's and bonnet isn't even with the rest...Mkay.
I was hoping it would have the tesla motor and battery, and james was on the eco mode. Then he brought it back to the shop, and they turned on insane mode for him "I got that fizzy feeling from an MGB" lol
I like the other MG in the garage even more than the MG B. It's the Moto Guzzi V11 Sport. :)
90k for that? No thanks
Why can’t he say “because”
oh that is lovely
James May telling the truth about engine 'noise'
Imagine your car broke down and james may in an electric MG drives by, roasting you on camera
Nothing to go wrong with an electric car made in the UK. ROFLMAO. Let's hope Lucas isn't involved.
What's the point , you get an old car for its simplicity and quirks, might as well just get a nissan leaf if you want a boring car like this.
Where do I order one?
No sound, no soul.
0-60 in 9 seconds and just a 160 mile range? where did the 90K go?
Aimed at babyboomers with way too much money. A trip down memory lane to fix their end-of-life-crisis.
I love electric, the lack of noise is blissful. Moreso when I have a motorway behind my house.
It's nice looking, but not 90k nice. I am biased though since It's not a stick.
I hate this guy in the hat with a burning passion and i"m 30 seconds in. if it wasn't for james id've stopped watching.
Electric cars are void of character. Plain and simple. It would be a travesty if all the sensation of driving an old car was removed from nearly all E-types and MGbs. It's like watching your favourite classic movie, Western, Disney, Starwars or Indiana Jones and suddenly in a scene, a banner came up saying. [WARNING THIS SCENE DEPICTS SEXISM AND BIGOTRY] It would forcefully ruin the movie. Like electrifying and old car.
That is beautiful that! If you go to the Haynes motor museum, they have an MG B in Ferrari Red parked alongside other Ferraris, and you know what? It doesn't look out of place at all!
My biggest dream is to own a fully electric Alfa Romeo 159. Also stop uploading interlaced videos in 2021, its not 2001 anymore.
It is basically modern car with retro chassis. Its brilliant!
I love it
